RUMBLE

RegUlation and norM for low sonic Boom LEvels

RUMBLE (RegUlation and norM for low sonic Boom LEvels) is a H2020 collaborative project dedicated to the production of the scientific evidence requested by national, European and international regulation authorities to determine the acceptable level of overland sonic booms and the appropriate ways to comply with it.

The high level objective of RUMBLE is to support the European contribution to a regulatory standard for low sonic boom at the United Nations’ International Civil Aviation Organisation, on an equal footing with other key countries.

Through the international collaboration between Europe and Russia, RUMBLE brings together 13 European and 5 Russian partners, combining scientific excellence, world-class research infrastructures and industrial leadership, with strong involvement in the regulatory bodies.

The primary outcomes of RUMBLE will be societal and environmental, as it provides the necessary data and procedure for a future, internationally-agreed standard on low sonic boom supersonic flights overland. This standard will help protect the European citizens' quality of life by guaranteeing, in agreement with ICAO general resolution 33-7, that no unacceptable situation is created by supersonic commercial flights. RUMBLE also paves the way for a future low boom flying demonstrator.

The main actions of the project are:

  • Development and assessment of sonic boom prediction tools
  • Study of the human response to sonic boom and
  • Validation of the findings using wind-tunnel experiments and actual flight tests

Extensive dissemination and regulatory activities ensure that the European considerations are taken into account in the evolution of the international regulation affecting civilian supersonic flights.

The RUMBLE project begun in November 2017 and will conclude its activities, having a lifespan of three years, in September 2020. The total budget of the project is approximately 13.2M€, 5M€ of them funded by the European Commission under H2020-MG-2016-2017 topic MG-1-2-2017 “Reducing Aviation Noise” (Grant Agreement number 769896).
